Design at the taste of LED Rating: 5.00 | Votes: 1

Posted on: 21/10/2011 by Stefania Caputo

LED technology is a recent innovation that has many advantages in terms of savings. It consists of a light source that is born as a result of a phenomenon that requires a minimal amount of energy, called electroluminescence. For this reason it is considered one of the latest technology useful for both current needs of energy saving and low environmental impact. The functioning of the LED light allows us to have a high intensity light with a substantial reduction in consumption and used energies. Compared to traditional bulbs it has an energy saving until 80-90%. Another advantage is its durability that is much more superior than both incandescent lamps and fluorescent ones. Although, therefore, the initial cost is higher than other solutions, in the time you can have benefits in both environmental and economic terms: longer life, lower consumption and low environmental impact.
A case of LED technology applied to the world of sustainable design is the tablelamp Swinging Re-light, designed by Denis Santachiara for Regenesi. This is a transparent lamp made of regenerated plastic material, traversed from bottom to top, from a LED light positioned hidden into the aluminum base. Its classic shape, recreated with a series of strips free to rotate around its stem, is illuminated becoming entirely a light source of refined elegance and originality. The combination of technological innovation, reclaimed materials and a deeply aesthetic search of beautiful creates a unique precious object, where luxury and sustainability live perfectly together.

Plastic bags in Africa are not used for shopping... Rating: 3.20 | Votes: 10

Posted on: 18/12/2009 by Silvia Barbero

In the Xhosa language, the word "Kunye" means "forward together", which is what Alison Coutras had in mind and was able to realize with the hens in recovered plastic!
After her studies in the U.S., she has returned to Cape Town with a strong motivation to help in solving the problem of unemployment, severe wound in the capital of South Africa, particularly for people with few skills. Alison wanted to "move together" with indigenous in the construction of local craft skills.

She began by making wind up traditional African dolls with clothes, with beads and with their faces painted according to tradition. More recently Kunye has developed a range of new craft products with Erna Moller, a social worker who works in Africa to care of leprosy patients. These products are made from recycled materials, such as chickens made of plastic recovered from the streets, and have won numerous awards.

More than in other places in the world, in Africa plastic bags have created enormous problems for rural and urban communities, but now it tries to run for recover, trying to block a settlement made of plastic and waste. One of the most widespread iniziative across the continent, there are total bans, high taxes on plastic bags, environmental policies based on recycling and eco-fashion and petitions on social networks, like Facebook.

It's aperitivo time: cut'n paste Rating: 3.25 | Votes: 8

Posted on: 16/10/2009 by Silvia Barbero

The jury of the competition It's Aperitivo Time, composed by Alberto Alessi, Martin Harlow, Stefano Giovanoni, Alberto Gozzi, Emma Moore, Ekow Eshun and Birgit Lohmann, declared the winners last 28th of September. The winner is Olive tree designed by Caroline Sipos and Jonathan Krawczuk from UK, but I want to propose here one project that take care of environment: cut'n paste by Beyza Paksin.
The aim of this project is to reuse the empty beer bottles in the aperitivo time. Cut'n Paste is a recycled tea cup: simple, but effective. The relation between the cup and bottle is strong. The top of the bottle is changed into the handle of the cup. It attracts attention to the recycling issue. The Cut'n Paste tea cup is produced after certain processes. The empty bottles usually are thrown away and collected in the recycling containers. The recycling trucks take and bring them to the factory where they are reproduced as tea cups. Firstly, their packages are took off. Then each bottle is cut in three pieces. The middle part is sent to melting for the glass reproduction. The bottom is the body of the cup. The top is the handle. The cut surfaces of the body and the handle are emeried and polished. After that, one side of the handle is emeried to get a flat surface. It is fixed with ultraviolet adhasive to the body, becase of their heat resistance.

Waste food for fabric! Rating: 4.36 | Votes: 11

Posted on: 22/09/2009 by Silvia Barbero, Stella Treno

We look around in the fashion world, and everywhere we can see natural elements and its inspirational power.
Last Friday in Paris, Premier Vision, the World's Premier Fabric Show, closed with many eco-lifestyle materials: from the older and well known ones as cotton, linen, wool, bamboo, to strange and surprising ones, as chicken's feathers, from which the cheratine is extracted and used to create light but strong fibers, as salmon's skin, that is used to produce belts, bags, shoes and many other accessories, as soybean, that is already called "vegetable cachemire" because of its softness and transpirancy, as bananas or coffee.
At that point, our question was about the role of food in the fashion sector, and looking for an ethical answer the FAO surprise us defining the 2009 as the natural fiber's year. Often the substances extracted to obtain these new materials come from the waste of food, so you cannot deny a potential food for human survival.
So, if you are interested in these different fiber have a look at this website: www.naturalfibres2009.org
And lets talk about it!
