 The perceptible phenomena primarily depend on the operation of microscopic structures that constitute the intimate nature of everything around us. From this idea Biomimetics was born, a discipline that studies the systems and processes of nature as a model for the development of technological as biological solutions. The first example is the invention of Velcro in 1948 by the Swiss chemist George Mestral, starting from the hooked shape of the cocklebur seeds that were clinging to his pants after a walk; or the self-cleaning coatings for exteriors that take inspiration from the surface of lotus leaves. But Biomimetics is also a thinking approach towards finding "sustainable" solutions inspired by functioning of nature. All natural systems, in fact, meet certain basic principles. In particular, they are based on closed cycles that exclude the formation of waste: everything is reused and redeployed through cooperation and interdependence relations. In the case of products based on this principle, when no longer used and become waste, they must have the conditions to become a new resource, to be non-toxic and recyclable and thus sustainable. Imitating nature, in this case, means not only to take hold of his suggestions using them to its disadvantage, but to reproduce it in order to respect its intimate working. Tecnologia secondo natura I fenomeni che per noi sono percepibili dipendono in primo luogo dal funzionamento di strutture microscopiche che costituiscono l’intima natura di ogni cosa che ci circonda. Da questa idea è nata la Biomimetica, una disciplina che studia i sistemi e i processi della natura come modello di riferimento per lo sviluppo di soluzioni tecnologiche a carattere biologico. Il primo esempio è l’invenzione nel 1948 del velcro a opera del chimico svizzero George Mestral a partire dalla forma uncinata dei semi di nappole che gli si erano attaccati al pantalone, durante una passeggiata; o le vernici per esterni autopulenti che prendono ispirazione dalla superficie delle foglie di loto. Ma la Biomimetica è anche un approccio di pensiero verso la ricerca di soluzioni “sostenibili” ispirate al funzionamento della natura. Tutti i sistemi naturali, infatti, rispettano alcuni principi fondamentali. In particolare si basano su cicli chiusi che escludono la formazione di rifiuti: tutto viene riutilizzato e reimpiegato attraverso rapporti di cooperazione e interdipendenza. A partire da questa idea si cerca di progettare prodotti privi di composti tossici che inevitabilmente la natura non sarebbe in grado di smaltire. Nel caso di prodotti basati su questo principio, quando non sono più utilizzati e diventano rifiuto, questi devono possedere le condizioni per diventare nuova risorsa, essere riciclabili e atossici e dunque sostenibili. Imitare la natura, in questo caso, vuol dire non solo impossessarsi dei suoi suggerimenti usandoli a suo discapito, ma riprodurla per rispettarne il suo intimo funzionamento.
